Learn the truth about the burning of Washington, North Carolina by the "Yankees." See the evidence as they cut the fire hoses and set fire in all parts of the town just before they departed.

Follow the story of the Confederate Monument and how it produced controversy in the town of Washington.   Discover the birth of three local United Confederate Veterans Associations and the formation of five Sons of Confederate Veterans Camps.

Observe the beginning of the Memorial Day services that have lasted annually since 1883 and kept faithfully by the Pamlico Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Follow the aging veterans as they passed away one by one.   Their story is told, sometimes briefly and other times in great length, in local newspaper obituary columns.

Beaufort County has always been prolific in generating heroes, both black and white.   You may weep as you read the accounts of these men.
The author, Louis Wilkinson Martin, Jr. was born in 1947 and raised and educated in Beaufort County, North Carolina.   Mr. Martin's ancestors came from England in 1640 and settled in Virginia.   Joel Martin moved his family to North Carolina and in 1705 helped establish, by an Act of the General Assembly, the town of Bath.   It was in Bath that Joel Martin formed a partnership with John Lawson, North Carolina's most famous author and explorer.   Louis Martin's roots are established deep in the coastal plains of eastern North Carolina and generations of the Martin family have proudly served Beaufort and Hyde Counties during the past 300 years.   A deep love and lifelong interest in local history prompted Mr. Martin to write this book.   Mr. Martin is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and has held many offices within his Camp.

The War Between the States has been over for 137 years and the United States is again "One Nation Under God."   This book is offered as a tribute to those men and women who were true Confederate-American Heroes.
